One question I have been getting from families when they reach out to me is  . . . “What if my child doesn’t cooperate?”

Listen, after 10+ years of teaching children from ages 6 to 11, I have seen it all. Part of my job is to bring out the best in your children and it all starts before I meet them! I want to make sure we set your family up for success to ensure that we capture your family authentically. Here are some simple tips BEFORE  you arrive at a session:

#1 Communication, communication, communication!

I love the opportunity find out a little bit about your family before we meet. Each family that books with me will get a client survey. In this survey you can tell me a little bit about your family. What do your kids like? If I know that your child likes Frozen I can make sure I brush up who the characters are and the songs. This way we can start off on the right foot right from the start! What do they dislike? I had a family tell me that their baby didn't like loud noises because it scared them. Knowing this before hand changed my whole approach to interacting with the child!

#2 ALWAYS Bring a Snack/Water!

I’m pretty sure children are a bottomless pit when it comes to food. Make sure your children are fed before a session no matter what age. Even if they just ate, have a quick snack on hand like pretzels or a personal favorite of mine, Pirate’s Booty. This also includes water!

#3 Leave the Toys at Home!

Sometimes toys can be helpful but other times the kids lose interest in taking pictures quickly when you bring them out. I always bring a variety of items (stuffed animals, a squeaky ball, bubbles, etc.) to use during family sessions. I’ve also been known to break out some great dance moves and songs. Leave the entertainment up to me!

#4 Set the Tone.

Remember that you (and I) set the tone for the session just like I would in the classroom. If you are calm and excited, so will they. “Today we get to take pictures with Ms. Allie! She can’t wait to meet you!” They are little sponges that feed off the energy of the adults around them. This also goes for me too! From the second I meet your child I want them to know that we are going to have fun!
